Learn what a bulkplate for coupler does in high-power rockets and follow step-by-step instructions to install it securely.
Quick Answer
A bulkplate for coupler is a reinforced disc that fits inside a tube coupler to anchor recovery components or separate stages. Installing it correctly ensures your high-power rocket's recovery system deploys reliably.
Why Use a Bulkplate in a Coupler?
A coupler joins two body tubes, but it also creates a sealed compartment for parachutes or electronics. The bulkplate gives you a solid mounting point for eye bolts or U-bolts without relying on thin tube walls. This is especially important in larger rockets where recovery loads are higher.
The Bulkplate for Coupler from PML includes eye bolts, and for 6" and larger sizes, a 2.5" wide U-bolt with nuts and a metal bar for extra strength. Note that this part is designed for PML phenolic tube couplers—if you're using LOC cardboard couplers, you'll need a different bulkhead variant.
Trade-Offs to Consider
A bulkplate adds weight and reduces internal volume inside the coupler. In smaller rockets, this can shift the center of gravity aft, so check your stability before flying. Also, if you epoxy the bulkplate in permanently, you lose access to that section of the airframe—plan your component layout accordingly.
How to Install a Bulkplate for Coupler
- Dry Fit and Mark Position: Slide the coupler into the body tube and mark where the bulkplate will sit. The bulkplate should be recessed about 1/2" from the end of the coupler so you have room for the mating tube later. Test-fit the bulkplate inside the coupler—it should slide in snugly but not require force. If the fit is too tight, sand the bulkplate edges lightly. Too loose, and the epoxy joint may fail under load.
- Rough Up Surfaces for Bonding: Sand the inside of the coupler where the bulkplate will sit, and both faces of the bulkplate. Use 80-grit sandpaper to create a mechanical bond. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth or isopropyl alcohol. Skipping this step is the most common cause of bulkplate separation during flight.
- Mix and Apply Epoxy: Use a high-strength epoxy like RocketPoxy or Aeropoxy. Apply a thin layer to the inside of the coupler and the edge of the bulkplate. Insert the bulkplate to your marked depth, rotating it slightly to spread the epoxy evenly. Wipe away any squeeze-out with a paper towel before it cures. Don't use 5-minute epoxy for this joint—it becomes brittle in cold weather and can crack under recovery shock.
- Install Hardware (If Not Pre-Installed): Thread the eye bolt or U-bolt through the center hole of the bulkplate. Add a washer and lock nut on the back side. Tighten securely but avoid over-torquing that could crack the bulkplate. For the supplied U-bolt, place the metal bar across the U and tighten the nuts evenly. Apply a drop of thread-locker to prevent the nut from vibrating loose during flight.
- Allow Full Cure and Test: Let the epoxy cure for at least 24 hours at room temperature. After curing, tug firmly on the hardware to verify the bond. Slide the coupler into the body tube to confirm the bulkplate doesn't interfere with the fit. If the coupler won't slide in smoothly, sand down any epoxy drips on the outside of the coupler.
Product Facts
- Bulkplate for Coupler: Bulkplate for PML phenolic tube coupler. Eye bolts included. 6" and larger include a 2.5" wide strong U bolt with nuts and metal bar. You get the mounting hardware in the box, so you don't need to source separate eye bolts or U-bolts for larger builds.
